We meet upstairs at the Lord Palmerston, 252-254 Forest Rd, E17 5JN, a ten-minute walk from Blackhorse Rd Underground.
Our regular club nights are Mondays from 7pm but we sometimes have additional meetings.
Come to club nights as a guest as often as you like. No membership needed, no fee. And no need to bring anything: we provide sets, boards, and (optionally) clocks.
To represent the club in matches or play in club competitions we ask that you become a member. This will just need a short form. We won’t charge for membership, although we welcome donations to help us bring chess to our local community. [Membership programme will begin early 2026.]
If you know how to move the pieces, you’re a chess player. Any standard is welcome.
Lots of our regulars fell in love with online chess and wanted to try playing over the board. Most have ratings between 700 and 1400 on chess.com but if you’re below this you’re also welcome. You’ll probably lose a bit but hopefully you’ll learn and have fun anyway.
We also welcome experienced players. Our stronger players (1400–1800 ECF) represent the club in local leagues and national competitions.
Walthamstow Chess Club is primarily an adults’ club (we play in a pub, after all). We recommend that parents of eager juniors contact our friends at E4 Chess Club in Chingford. Wanstead Chess Club also has a strong junior section. That said, older children can attend our club nights if accompanied and over the age of 11. This is a condition of the venue’s licence.
